From the Associate Principal

Our value for term 3 is Determination

Determination is all about working really hard

to achieve a goal no matter how difficult or hard it seems to be.

Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salaam

Dear Parents and caregivers

We are now in Week 5 of Term 3 and it is very pleasing to see so many students working really hard with their learning. Our school provides many extra learning opportunities also, and a large number of students participate in the options and the sports training during Break 1 and 2. Thank you to the teachers and staff who provide these extra opportunities for your children.

Congratulations: Well done to two groups of students who achieved very successful results recently. Firstly, congratulations to the PCS ‘A’ Chess team who won the South Auckland Primary School Chess Tournament. Thank you to Mrs Talbot for organising our team and Mr Leonard McLaren for coaching the students. Secondly, congratulations to our Year 4, 5 and 6 Mathex teams who won their category at the Papatoetoe Schools’ Mathex competition last week. We seem to have ongoing success in these competitions. Thank you to Mrs Baidwan who coached the Mathex teams, and to all our teachers who provide quality Maths programmes for all our students.

Te reo ‘Word of the Week’: Whaea Paea, our Te Reo Maori teacher, has introduced ‘word of the week’ to our school assembly on Monday. Last week the word was ‘awhi’ which means to care, to help, to support. This week’s word is ‘mauri’ which is about respecting and caring for all living things, and also relates to the uniqueness of every individual.

PCS Values: This term’s value is ‘Determination’ so I am sure you will join us in encouraging and supporting your children with their learning, and always trying their best even when the learning may be difficult or hard. The value of determination reminds me of when Lauren Boyle, our top NZ swimmer, visited us two years ago just after she had won 3 bronze medals at the Swimming World Championships. She talked to the school about setting ‘hard goals’ and then working to achieve them. Last month at the World Championships she won 2 silver medals, so by setting ‘hard goals’ we can see how we can keep improving and achieve very successful results.

It is also important for our students to remember their PCS values of Polite, Considerate and Sensible, and to remember the very simple and very important manners of ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’.

Family meetings: Last term we met with a group of families from Cambodia, China, The Philippines and Vietnam to share aspects of our learning programmes and to discuss learning ideas that we could include in our programmes. Tonight we will be meeting with a group from our Indian parents who have offered to join our Indian Reference Group.

Future Events: We have a number of school events taking place over the rest of the term, including

  • Year 6 Camp Stalls
  • Papatoetoe Choir Festival
  • Year 5 and 6 Marae visit
  • Papatoetoe Schools’ Cross Country
  • PCS Year 5 and 6 Speech Competition
  • PCS Talent Show

Dates are below for these events.

All the best for an enjoyable weekend with your children. It will seem a little different with no All Blacks or Silver Ferns matches to follow. However, the Track and Field World Championships start this weekend, which will be thrilling to watch. No Valerie Adams this year, but watch out for our top shot-putter, Tom Walsh and keep on eye on Angie Petty who is ranked 7th in the world for 800 metres. And let’s hope for some more early spring sunshine.
