From the Principal

Dear Parents and caregivers

Zone Sports Day: We were pleased to participate in this year’s winter sports day with our local cluster of schools at Bruce Pullman Park. (It had been cancelled due to bad weather in the previous two years). A full report of the day is included in the next section. Thank you and warmest congratulations to all staff concerned. Our soccer coaches Rachel Cromie and Peter Robinson are still basking in their glory and justifiably so!

BoT Meeting: 5.30pm Monday 22 June: You are all welcome to attend the BoT meeting on Monday evening in the oval room. We will be presenting mid year school-wide achievement data.

Reports and Three-Way Conferences: You will receive your child’s mid year report next Friday, 26 June. Three way conferences will take place the following Thursday, 2 July. We hope to see you all at the conferences to discuss your child’s progress during the first half of this year and their next learning steps.

Science Fair: As in previous years, you are welcome to call in at the hall to view this year’s science fair on Thursday, 2 July. Science teacher Lena Erakovich is working extensively with students to prepare the exhibits and I am sure it will be well worth a visit when you come to your three-way conference.

July School Holidays: Please note that school closes at 3.00pm on Friday 3 July for two weeks. We will welcome everyone back on Monday 20 July.

Warmest wishes for the weekend ahead. I am sure many of you have enjoyed the Under 20 soccer tournament that is underway at the moment. The final is shaping up to be quite a spectacle. I do hope that you can enjoy some special time with your special children, at some stage.

Our A soccer team had a fantastic result finishing 2nd. The B soccer team did one better coming 1st. The soccer teams played with great skill, flair and sportsmanship.

The A netball team had 3 wins and the B team was competitive in all their games. Netball C had 3 wins and the D team had 1 win. Notable for these teams was the close games they played and excellent team work. The E and F netball teams played each game with the same effort and enthusiasm.

The under 40’s rugby also enjoyed their games and played with spirit and determination.

Thank you to our great coaches who have trained the teams throughout the term. Each team has increased their knowledge and enjoyment of sport.

Heat Pump: Some of you may have seen the story on Fair Go last night about getting the most out of your heat pump. More than a quarter of New Zealand homes have a heat pump as they are a really energy efficient way of heating your home.

Here are some basic rules you can follow to get the most out of your heat pump and make it work for you.

  • A correctly sized unit doesn’t need to be run 24/7 to warm a room
  • Set it on a timer to run before you get up or before you get home from work
  • Make sure the settings are correct.
  • Set it for 20-23 degrees depending on your house and preference. High settings such as 28 degrees will cause your power bill to be very high
  • Keep the outdoor ventilation unit clean and clear
  • Clean your filter every two months. Just lift up the front, pull out the filters and wash them with a mild cleaning agent
  • Have your heat pump serviced annually by a professional technician and don’t forget to check the batteries in the remote, if your heat pump is not working! You can watch the full video on the TVNZ website.
