From the Principal

Dear Parents and caregivers

Zone Sports Day: We were pleased to participate in this year’s winter sports day with our local cluster of schools at Bruce Pullman Park. (It had been cancelled due to bad weather in the previous two years). A full report of the day is included in the next section. Thank you and warmest congratulations to all staff concerned. Our soccer coaches Rachel Cromie and Peter Robinson are still basking in their glory and justifiably so!

BoT Meeting: 5.30pm Monday 22 June: You are all welcome to attend the BoT meeting on Monday evening in the oval room. We will be presenting mid year school-wide achievement data.

Reports and Three-Way Conferences: You will receive your child’s mid year report next Friday, 26 June. Three way conferences will take place the following Thursday, 2 July. We hope to see you all at the conferences to discuss your child’s progress during the first half of this year and their next learning steps.

Science Fair: As in previous years, you are welcome to call in at the hall to view this year’s science fair on Thursday, 2 July. Science teacher Lena Erakovich is working extensively with students to prepare the exhibits and I am sure it will be well worth a visit when you come to your three-way conference.

July School Holidays: Please note that school closes at 3.00pm on Friday 3 July for two weeks. We will welcome everyone back on Monday 20 July.

Warmest wishes for the weekend ahead. I am sure many of you have enjoyed the Under 20 soccer tournament that is underway at the moment. The final is shaping up to be quite a spectacle. I do hope that you can enjoy some special time with your special children, at some stage.

Regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Principal

Heat Pump: Some of you may have seen the story on Fair Go last night about getting the most out of your heat pump. More than a quarter of New Zealand homes have a heat pump as they are a really energy efficient way of heating your home.

Here are some basic rules you can follow to get the most out of your heat pump and make it work for you.

  • A correctly sized unit doesn’t need to be run 24/7 to warm a room
  • Set it on a timer to run before you get up or before you get home from work
  • Make sure the settings are correct.
  • Set it for 20-23 degrees depending on your house and preference. High settings such as 28 degrees will cause your power bill to be very high
  • Keep the outdoor ventilation unit clean and clear
  • Clean your filter every two months. Just lift up the front, pull out the filters and wash them with a mild cleaning agent
  • Have your heat pump serviced annually by a professional technician and don’t forget to check the batteries in the remote, if your heat pump is not working! You can watch the full video on the TVNZ website.

Our value for term 2 is:  Honesty – Being honest is being open, trustworthy and truthful.

 Dear Parents and caregivers

The winter weather has arrived with a very watery blast this week. This resulted in an increasing carpet of leaves on the school courts each morning. Although the winter weather requires students to remain indoors, many of our students spend time during the breaks at the different options that are provided including the art/craft sessions, mathletics, library, Indian dance, jump jam and many more.

Mid year reports: This term is going very quickly and it is great to see the fantastic learning that is happening across the whole school. Teachers are finalising mid year reports at the moment which are an opportunity to inform you of your children’s progress and achievement, so far this year. The reports will be sent home on Friday 26 June. Three-way conferences are scheduled for Thursday 2 July.

Auckland University Student Teachers: Last week we welcomed five student teachers from the Faculty of Education of Auckland University for a five week practicum. These student teachers are all university graduates and they bring a range of interesting experiences to their future teaching careers. Our teachers are experienced associate teachers who support them professionally during their time with us and we appreciate the work of the student teachers in our classrooms.

Please Check Below: A Special Notice for our Indian Families.

Have a lovely weekend with your special children, and remember a wet weekend is a wonderful opportunity to so some reading together.

Regards

Susan Fidler

Mathematics at Papatoetoe Central School

Dear parents and caregivers

I am sure that many of you read the article in this morning’s “New Zealand Herald” that criticises the way students are taught maths and calls on parents to demand a return to basics. I am writing to clarify our maths curriculum and to assure you that we teach a very structured and focused maths programme at our school. We have made changes to maths teaching at our school in recent years. » Click here to read Mathematics at Papatoetoe Central School
