From the Associate Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we head towards the Christmas season, there are many things happening at Papatoetoe Central School. Our students are still working hard and they are also busy preparing for the Christmas concerts on 10 December.

Year 6 Camp:  Last week was a very happy and successful week for our Year 6 students when they attended the annual Year 6 camp at Carey Park, Henderson Valley. I visited on two days and it was great to see all the students participating in the outdoor learning activities. For some students, the activities were quite challenging but it was very satisfying to see them all attempting every challenge with enthusiasm and a smile on their face. For some children, it may have been the first time they stayed away from home which may seem daunting. But it is part of the ‘growing up experience’ so well done to all the students who achieved this important step in life.

A huge thank you to the Year 6 parents who attended the camp for all or some of the week. Your support was greatly appreciated and I know the students enjoyed spending the week with you. Every time I now hear the song ‘Happy’ I will be picturing colourful wigs and strange costumes!

And finally, I am sure all Year 6 families join me in thanking all the teachers who organised the 2015 camp –Alex Hanson, Michelle Prasad, Paul McAleer, Maggie Lee and Patricia Lelei. Planning for the camp started this time last year and it is a huge task organising a week of activities for 120 students – so well done, Year 6 Team on your very successful and rewarding camp.

Christmas raffle:  Thank you to the families who have supported this PTA fundraiser. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 3 December.

Christmas concerts – Wednesday 10 December:  We look forward to seeing you here for the annual Christmas concerts and family picnic lunch. The concert times are below and you are very welcome to bring along a picnic lunch to have with your children in between the two concerts. For your comfort, you may wish to bring a cushion to sit on in the hall.

Christmas concert times:

  • Junior concert (Year 1 – 3): 11:45am in the hall
  • Picnic lunch: 12:40 pm
  • Senior concert (Year 4 – 6): 1:45pm in the hall

End of Year Reports:  This is the time of year when teachers spend considerable time collecting and reporting on your children’s achievement data across the whole curriculum.  You will receive the reports on 15 December.

Swimming Sports:  Unfortunately, the swimming sports on 4 December have been cancelled. We are trying to reschedule this event early in Term 1.

Other school events:  I am sure our Year 6 students are looking forward to the Graduation Dinner on 11 December and the Graduation assembly on 16 December. These two events are two very special events on our PCS calendar.  Year 6 parents and caregivers, you are very welcome to join us at the Graduation assembly on 16 December at 11:30am

It has been great to see sunshine during the week, so let’s hope for an enjoyable sunny weekend. After last night’s Papatoetoe Christmas Parade, it seems like the Christmas build-up has really started. So good luck in the shopping centres – I think I will head to the beach instead!

Kind regards

Ross McGowan

Market Day:  It has been a busy time around school recently with everyone preparing arts and crafts ready for  selling at our school Market Day this afternoon. Students have been working with their teachers to put together something marketable which could be sold at our school Market Day.

There has been playdough mixing, painting, cookie cutting, crayon counting, popcorn popping, baking, icing, button threading, pasting, tying, sorting, measuring, stirring, packaging….all sorts of activities going on in classrooms.

The children have been learning about how to make a quality finished product which people will want to buy. They have been talking about budgeting and finances and market values- all concepts which help to build their financial literacy.

And the best part is; it has been such fun! This afternoon we all get to wander around the stalls and see what everyone else has been up to. We get to spend our money to buy some of the crafts which have been created. And we are supporting our school when we do it. Fabulous!      The Environment and Sustainability Group
