Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salaam

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are now halfway through Term 3 and it is great to see our students fully involved with their learning and school life at Papatoetoe Central School. Many of our students spend time during the breaks at the different options that are provided including the art/craft sessions, maths, library, gardening and sports. As I visit classrooms, it is very pleasing to hear the children talk about their own learning and how they are going to progress to their next level.

There are a number of school events coming up in the remainder of this term.

Mathex: Congratulations to our three Mathex teams who participated in the Papatoetoe Schools’ Mathex Competition last week. Our teams represented our school with pride and achieved fantastic results:

  • Year 4: 1st
  • Year 5: 2nd
  • Year 6: 1st

Well done to Grace Wu, Stephanie Jit, Joanna Lee, Manav Bhavsar, Fergus Lee, Amber Vodanovich, Pranjal Chand, Joshua Lin, Shivee Singh, Jason Liu, Sarah-Joy Aruwa and Liyork Liao. Thank you to the Maths teachers who prepared the students for the competition.

Pasifika Showcase: Many exciting activities are happening at the moment in preparation for ‘Pasifika Showcase’ which is taking place on Friday 19 September. Many classes are preparing some stunning pieces of art; song and dance items are being rehearsed; and learning is taking place about the six Pasifika countries which are represented at our school. Many thanks to the parents who have visited classes or offered Pasifika items for the classes to observe. More details about Pasifika Showcase will be in the next newsletter. Put Friday 19 September in your diary – we look forward to seeing you here.

Papatoetoe Schools’ Art Festival: The Art Festival is taking place at Papatoetoe North School next month. Mrs Dev Singh has collected art from across our school that will be on display at the exhibition. The exhibition is open for parents and families on:

  • Wednesday 3 September from 9:00am to 7:00pm
  • Thursday 4 September from 9:00am to 4:30pm

Indian Parent Community Consultation Afternoon : Our school is holding a consultation afternoon for our Indian families on Monday 22 September at 3:15pm. We have held similar meetings for our Maori and Pasifika families and it is an opportunity to talk about learning experiences and opportunities for your children while they are at Papatoetoe Central School. More details will be sent home in the next newsletter.

Keeping in touch: Just a reminder that teachers are available to meet with you to discuss any learning matters about your child. Teachers are in their classrooms before school from 8:30am if you wish to have a quick chat. If this time is not convenient, you will need to phone to make an appointment.

There may be times when you wish to speak to the Deputy Principal, Sue Fidler, if your child is in Year 1 to 3; or the Associate Principal, Ross McGowan, if your child is in Year 4 to 6.

All the best for an enjoyable weekend, and here’s hoping for a good win (not a draw) for the All Blacks against our Australian cousins this weekend.

Regards,
Ross McGowan

Wonderful Worm TeaWorm tea may not sound too appetising but your plants will really love it. Worm tea is a liquid produced by tiger worms, which is high in nitrogen, and when diluted with water makes a highly nutritious plant food, as well as an effective fungicide and insecticide. Worm tea lets you fertilise without adding bulk to your soil and water your garden with something really nutritious for your plants. Because the beneficial micro-organisms contained in the worm tea are absorbed immediately by the soil and plants in your garden, you will be amazed at the growth and flowering that results.

If you have a worm bin, you can make your own worm tea but if you don’t you can buy this amazing fertiliser from our very own office at school. We have a worm farm here and a group of dedicated student gardeners who look after it and carefully collect the worm tea into bottles. These bottles of garden goodness are available for $3.00.

Daffodil Day: This is one of our most important fundraisers, each year. I am sure that everyone knows someone who has had cancer or is currently receiving treatment for cancer. We are having a gold coin mufti day on Friday, 29 August that I am sure you will support. Thank you for your donation.

Music in Schools: Keyboard and Piano lessons are available at Papatoetoe Central School during school hours.  For more information contact Music in Schools Ph 273 3411.
