From the Deputy Principal

Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salam

Dear parents and caregivers,

The good weather continues and the term is well underway. We are all enjoying our regular weekly assemblies and options programmes. The children are very settled and working well around the school.

Swimming Zones: The Papatoetoe Schools’ Swimming Zone competition will take place on Tuesday, March 4 at our local pools. We wish our competitors good speed in the water! Parents are welcome to attend.

The Tironui Music Trust: Recently a selection process took place and 27 of our year 5 students will now have the opportunity to learn a string instrument while at school. The Tironui Music Trust provides the teachers and the instruments, free of charge, all we need to do is provide the learning spaces. Twenty four of our year 6 students are continuing their tuition with the Tironui Trust teachers this year, so very soon Papatoetoe Central School will have a string orchestra of over 50 students! This is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to some mini performances later this year. Thank you Tironui Music Trust!

Milk in School: Milk in school started this week without too many glitches. We have decided most students will have their milk directly after break 2 as a boost of energy for the afternoon programme. Please read the form accompanying this newsletter carefully. You only need to complete this form if your child is not to have milk.

A message to our Pasifika families: We would like to meet our Pasifika families again this year at our Pasifika fono evening that will take place on Thursday 20 March at 6pm. This evening is an opportunity to meet with you and talk about learning opportunities and experiences for your children while they are at Papatoetoe Central School, and to follow-up on the work done since we met last year. An invitation will come home early next week with further details. We look forward to seeing you on 20 March.

The NZ Curriculum (NZC): Relating to Others: Included in the NZC are a set of key competencies that all NZ schools are required to include in their learning programmes. Each year we select one of these key competencies as a special focus while also addressing the remaining key competencies. At our school this year, we are going to focus on the key competency: Relating to others. This competency is about interacting effectively with a diverse range of people in a variety of contexts. This competency includes the ability to listen actively, recognise different points of view, negotiate and share ideas.

Meet your child’s teacher: Reminder “Meet the Teacher” evening is on Thursday 6 March, 6.00 – 7.15pm.

Have a lovely weekend with your special children.

Kindest regards

Susan Fidler
Deputy Principal
