From the Associate Principal

Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salam

Dear parents and caregivers,

We seem to be experiencing the end of winter weather this week. Let’s hope for some more spring-like weather, as a number of our students are participating in sports activities over the next few weeks. Our Year 3 and 4 classes are participating in a sporting skills development programme organised by Counties Manukau Sports on Wednesday afternoons; our Rippa Rugby team will participate at the Rippa Rugby zone day on 27 August; and our indoor soccer teams continue their competition at Alan Brewster Centre on Monday afternoons.

Official Language Weeks: This year we have celebrated a number of official language weeks – Samoa, Maori and Cook Island Maori. We have included these celebrations in our assemblies with involvement from our students and the Maori and Pasifika student leaders and council.

Next month we will celebrate Tongan Language week from 1 – 7 September; and National Hindi language week from 16 – 21 September. I would like to invite parents and family members to join a focus planning group to look at some activities we can include at Papatoetoe Central School for Hindi language week. If you would like to join this group, please phone the main office 2787557 or email admin@pcs.school.nz

Kapa Haka Festival: Our school Kapa Haka group has been preparing for their performance at the Papatoetoe Schools’ Kapa Haka Festival which is taking place on 11 September. The students have been practising a number of items in readiness for the festival. I hope you are able to attend the festival – more details will follow. Many thanks for the fantastic coaching from Whaea Kara Luke, Matua Darren Williams and Darleen Martin.

What’s the Plan Stan? Next Tuesday the NZ Civil Defence will visit our school to speak to the students about civil defence emergency procedures. The presentation is called ‘What’s the Plan Stan’. The children will bring home an information pack so families are able to develop their own emergency plans.

Daffodil Day: Papatoetoe Central School is supporting Daffodil Day to raise money for the wonderful support provided by the NZ Cancer Society. This will take place next Friday 30 August and we encourage the children to support this worthy cause by wearing yellow and donating a gold coin.

As always, thank you for all your support of your children’s learning at Papatoetoe Central School. Term 3 is flying by and it is great to see the children fully involved and happy in their learning.

All the best for an enjoyable weekend…..with some sunshine, I hope. I am sure many of you will be watching the All Blacks playing against our Australian cousins, hopefully with another win as stunning as Valerie Adams’ gold medal win at last weeks’ world championships.

Kindest regards

Ross McGowan
Associate Principal

Chess Tournament: Congratulations to Henry Wang, Arav Gaundar, Anusha Gaundar and Fergus Lee who participated in the Chess Power Inter School tournament at Rosehill Intermediate yesterday. Congratulations to Arav who was top junior boy, Anusha who was second junior girl and the team for finishing second overall. This has qualified Papatoetoe Central School to take 6 players to the Chess Power National Finals Chess Championships on September 10th at Alexandra Park. Well done, team!

Storylines Festival – 17 August at Vodafone Events Centre: This is the first time that Storylines has held a family day in South Auckland. Some of our students took part in the competitions that were offered by Storylines. It consisted of 3 categories : Writing a poem of a favourite book character or illustrate a favourite book cover. It was exciting to have one of students, Mohit Kapila (Room 25) as a winner of the illustration section, age 10 – 12! He was awarded a certificate and a set of books! You have done PCS proud!
