From the Principal

Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salam

Dear parents and caregivers,

Mid Year Report: Today you will be receiving your child’s mid year report. As you know, we have done a lot of work in our school to develop consistency between the NZ Curriculum levels, the associated literacy and numeracy stages, nationally standardised test results and the government’s national standards. We have done our best to align all of these, but we continue to feel concerned about the lack of validity and reliability where national standards are concerned.

Please read with care the insert included in your child’s report, explaining the assessment data. Also, please prepare for your 3-way conference on Thursday 8 August, by completing the back section of the report, once you have gone through it with your child.

Most children are working hard and are achieving at the expected NZ Curriculum level. Those who require support are receiving it, without exception. We are very proud of the way each student’s progress is monitored and action taken quickly when required. Our BoT, your elected representatives , are very supportive in their provision of funding and resources to support all students at our school.

Term Break Monday 15 July – Friday 26 July: School closes tomorrow for 2 weeks. We will welcome children back on Monday 29 July. All the best for the weekend and the term break ahead and thank you for your support during this term. We are all appreciative of your support where your child’s learning and development is concerned.

Kindest regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

General Notices

Welcome to our new students: Cheng Cheng Su

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. Saving Water Tips: Have a no-bath week, and take showers instead. Baths require almost twice as much water. Not only will you reduce water consumption, but the energy costs associated with heating the water. You can save lots of water when brushing your teeth if you only use the water to rinse.

PCS Basketball: Over the course of Term 2 we have had 2 PCS basketball teams competing at the Allan Brewster Recreation Centre in the After School Basketball Competition. This was held each Monday afternoon and both teams performed with great credit, steadily improving their teamwork and skills during the competition. On Monday the Finals were held and resulted in our girls team finishing 3rd in their competition and the boys team 4th. They were fantastic games of basketball.

Well done to all the players and the parents/caregivers/supporters who supported our teams each week and a big thank you to Mr Liu for his wonderful coaching.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: We still need your help! This term and next term Year 5 & 6 students are making fabric from fused plastic bags. If you have supermarket shopping bags or bags from stores that you don’t need, could you please bring them in to us? If they are colourful, or have interesting prints on them, that’s even better. We can use ripped bags, but we can’t use bags that are sticky or dirty. We will need bags for about 200 children to work with, so we can take as many as you can give us.

Could you also help us with 2-litre sized plastic bottles? The Year 1 & 2 students are making mini-composters and they need big soft drink bottles or fizzy water bottles for their compost layers. Please bring bags or bottles to the technology room if you can spare them. Thank you very much to everyone who has already brought in bags and bottles!

PTA News: A huge thank you to all those who came along to the disco on Friday, the PTA appreciates your continued support. The PTA would also like to acknowledge the amazing prizes that SKIDS donated for best dancer at both the junior and senior disco.
