From the Principal

Greetings, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Ni sa bula vinaka, Salam

Dear parents and caregivers

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge your support last Saturday. It was really great to see so many of you at the PTA fair and we hope that you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. Sincere thank to all helpers and to everyone who contributed. One of the main goals was to involve our community and share in some fun with you and your children. I thought the children’s train was just the best – and I suspect that parents and caregivers enjoyed the ride around the field as much as the children did!

Thank you so much for your support and a special thanks to our wonderful PTA and their extended families, also. A special thank you also to Hellen Park who continues to support our school with her events management expertise and her renowned generosity of spirit. Please see the next section of today’s newsletter for a message from the PTA.

Fair Helpers’ Draw: All helpers who were able to help for more than 2 hours went into a draw for coffee and cake vouchers donated by local café “Urban Soul”. The 5 winners were: Katrece (MIT), Sharon Robertson, Frances Archer, James White and Katrina Spinks. Enjoy your coffee and cake, team!

Happy Easter: Best wishes to those of you who celebrate Easter. This is the central event in the Christian calendar – a time of renewal, transformation and celebration. I hope that you can enjoy a peaceful and reflective time with your families. As you know, the time of Easter varies as western churches celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. This is the first year for a long time that Easter has fallen outside of the April school holidays.

School closes today for the Easter break and re-opens next Wednesday, April 3.

Kindest regards

Marilyn Gwilliam
Principal

General Notices

Welcome to our new students: Yufei Xie, Grace Liu, Lyric Nili and Tanush Singh

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: We are now heading into the last few days of summer and this is a good time to think about what we can plant in the garden for autumn so we can eat it in winter. You can start planting cauliflower, celery, broccoli, beans and cabbage. It is still very warm so also plant some lettuce and radishes which should be ready in a few short weeks. Don’t forget to buy your worm tea from the Office. It is great for adding nutrients to the soil to help your veges and pot plants grow. Remember growing our own vegetables is often cheaper than buying them; and planting, harvesting and eating them is a great activity for all the family.

Book Club: The book club orders will close Friday, 5 April. Would you please make sure all orders and money are put into a sealed envelope and ALL CHEQUES are made out to Papatoetoe Central School, as we send one cheque to pay for our book order.

Term Dates

  • Friday, 29 March – Good Friday SCHOOL CLOSED
  • Monday 1 & Tuesday 2 April – Easter Monday and Tuesday – SCHOOL CLOSED
  • Wed 10 & Thurs 11 April – School portraits and class photos
  • Thursday, 11 April – Rippa Rugby

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. BEING ENERGY WISE: With autumn having arrived and winter on the way it’s time to check our homes to see how efficient they are at keeping the heat in and the cold out. One way is to close the blinds and curtains. For more ways to keep your house warm go to the ‘Energy Wise’ website – www.energywise.govt.nz It will show you ways to keep warm and help manage your power bill.

ElectionsBoard of Trustees Elections 2013: Nominations to become a Board of Trustees member will be coming out soon. All parents will be mailed a nomination form. If you have changed your address, please notify the school office. For more information please contact returning officer Lorraine Biggs on 278 7557.

School Photos Important Information: A prepaid envelope for each student was sent home. Please have the form and money returned to the school office by Tuesday, 9 April ready for photos to be taken on 10 & 11 April. For a special photo of your children together, collect a pre paid “Sibling Envelope” from the school office. No individual or sibling photos will be taken without pre payment. Please make sure you use the form with the attached envelope as it is pre printed with your child’s name, room etc and Photolife only gives us a few spares for new children.

PTA Thank You: A very BIG THANK YOU to everyone who donated goods, organised, volunteered, helped, attended, spent money, set up, cleaned up, did absolutely everything to help on the day plus plenty more – we couldn’t have done it without you. We have received a lot of positive feedback which is fabulous and always appreciated.

This week we will be working out the final totals for the fair and we will let you know next week how much was raised. The money that we raised is going towards safety matting for the fitness trail which is very expensive so we will be continuing to raise funds for this. If you have any ideas of things we could do to fundraise then please contact us via the school office or please come along to a PTA meeting – we would love to see you. The dates are listed in the Term Dates section of the newsletter. Thanks again, and have a happy Easter!
