Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have already reached the end of Term 1 after a very busy and successful term of learning at Papatoetoe Central School. I am sure you will join me in thanking the wonderful staff at PCS for all their work in planning and providing stimulating learning experiences for your children. During the 2 week break, it is a good idea to keep your children practicing their reading and writing skills – visiting the library, helping parents write a shopping list, sending an email to a friend or family member about a special holiday activity, making a plan for a family outing – and to enjoy some outdoor pursuits before we reach the winter weather. Let’s hope the Blues keep on their winning ways during the break…and maybe the Mystics will finally get a win.

Farewell: This week we farewell Danielle Greer, one of our teachers at Papatoetoe Central School. Danielle has taught many of your children during her four and a half years at PCS and I am sure all our PCS families join us in wishing Danielle all the very best for her future endeavours in Hamilton.

Welcome: We welcome Darian Curry who will be teaching in Room 11 from next term. Darian has previously been at Papatoetoe Central School as a graduate student and he is looking forward to joining the PCS community.

Maori and Pasifika Year Student leaders and Council: At assembly on Monday, we had a special presentation for our new leadership positions of Maori and Pasifika Student Leaders and Council. They were presented with their badges, and these students will be involved in organising and leading new Maori and Pasifika experiences at PCS.

The Maori Student leaders are Manaia Ratahi and Kieran Petelo; and the Maori Council members are Judi Barnard and Isaiah Ioane. The Pasifika Student Leaders are Arieta Farani and Cairo Iakopo; and the Pasifika Council member is Ayiesha Ismail. Congratulations to you all.

Pasifika email: A group email has been sent to our Pasifika families this morning. If you did not receive this email, can you please inform the school of your email address. Please contact jocelync@pcs.school.nz

Finally, thank you to our families for continuing to support your children’s learning this term. All the best for a very enjoyable autumn break with your children and we look forward to seeing you again next term.

Regards

Ross McGowan
Associate Principal

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: Now that winter is approaching it’s time to think about keeping warm while saving power. Block all draughts – 15% to 25% of heat escapes through gaps or poorly sealed areas. You can do this by blocking off unused fireplaces, fitting draught-excluders on doors and sealing doors and windows with weather stripping.

ANZAC Day: 25 April is an important day for New Zealand. It is a time that we stop and remember those who have given their lives for the freedoms we have today. Each ANZAC day there is a short service at Papatoetoe Central School, after the laying of wreaths at the Memorial Gates we parade down to the Papatoetoe RSA to participate in a short service. Papatoetoe Central School will be parading again this year. Children and families are welcome to come and join us. Students can meet Sharlene Howe on the field at 10am in their school uniform. The children will need to be collected from outside the RSA in Papatoetoe, after the parade.
