From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers, Kia ora, Namaste, Ni Hao, Talofa lava, Kia Orana

We have had a great start to the term and we know that we have a very busy time ahead. Please note term 4 events in the next section of today’s newsletter and keep your eye on the electronic sign on St George St for daily updates of school events.

It is wonderful to have the children back again after the break. They have all grown so much! We see this term as a very important learning time and all class programmes will be very focused and productive. We thank you in advance for your support with home learning. Please keep in regular contact with class teachers.

Greats and Grands Whanau Morning, Friday 19 October: 8.50 – 11.00am: We would love to welcome lots of grandparents, parents and caregivers to school tomorrow morning. You will have received a note on Monday about this. We decided to combine our annual greats and grands morning with an invitation to parents and caregivers to join in as well this year. Children will showcase their work and we love to see you all joining in, telling and reading stories and being part of the class on this special morning. Can you please pass on our invitation to grandparents.

  • 8.50am School hall for music and performing arts assembly
  • 9.30am Learning programmes in classrooms – you are welcome to join in
  • 10.30am Break. You are welcome to stay and spend some time with your children during their break

Additional New Entrant Class, Term 4: As we have a number of new entrant students, we have started another class. These students are in room 29, opposite Room 28 and the technology room.

Sun Smart Time: Just a reminder that it is essential that children have a school hat to wear during break and PE times at school this term. These can be purchased at school.

Market Day, Friday 9 November: 2.30pm – 3.15pm for parents: You are very welcome to come along to the market at 2.30pm. The PTA will have a 2nd hand (pre-loved) clothing sale.

Auckland Transport Consultation Documents: Please feel free to view in the school office some proposed changes to facilitate better traffic flow around our area. These plans have been provided by Auckland Transport and they welcome your feedback. Please ask our administration team and they will provide them for you to view in the office.

Labour Day, Monday October 22: As this weekend is Labour weekend, school will open again next Tuesday October 23.

Warmest wishes for a wonderful long weekend. We hope that you can enjoy some special time with your special children. Let’s all make the most of springtime and spend lots of time outside enjoying all that our lovely city has to offer.

Kind regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

General Notices

Welcome to our New Students: Valentino Schaaf, Lotosina Tavui, Daisy Sudan, Aahana Sharma, Rishab Ram and Aleluia Malaki Le’a

Assembly Day: No assembly on Monday as it is Labour Day.

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. Spring is now well underway and it is a good time to start planting lettuce, parsley, peas, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, leaks, tomatoes and potatoes. Watch out for slugs and keep your garden well watered. Take a look at the Environment Noticeboard at the end of Room 19 for more information about what to do in the vegetable garden in spring. And don’t forget to buy your worm tea from Reception. It is great for adding nutrients to the soil to help your veges and pot plants grow.

School Hats: The wearing of the school hat is compulsory at Papatoetoe Central School in terms one and four (summer). Could you please make sure your child/ren has a named school hat. The school office has hats available for $16.00 each.

Calendars, Cards and Diaries: Classes have been working hard to complete their calendar artwork. The order forms were sent home with each student at the end of last term. Please check at the office if you require a replacement form. The student’s artwork for these can be viewed in their classroom before or after school. There are some sample calendars, cards and diaries available for viewing at the office. Your child’s artwork will be laser copied so multiple items can be ordered using the same piece of artwork. The calendars and cards are a wonderful Christmas present idea for extended family members. Orders and payment are required before the artwork can be made into calendars, cards or diaries. The orders need to be in by October 29 so processing can be completed in good time. We are looking forward to your support with this excellent fundraiser.

School Athletics: Students who manage to get a placing within their house group will be able to take part in the PCS athletics day next Thursday, 25 October. There will also be some non competitive activities available for the students who do not qualify. Thank you to Mrs Renu Naidu and Mr Peter Robinson for organising the athletics.

PTA News

Quiz Night: The PTA held a very successful quiz night just before the end of Term 3 where $1,498 was raised. Everyone who attended had a fantastic night with lots of laughter; there was also some very interesting answers! Thank you to everyone who attended and to the organisers of this event – Ronnie Message, Hellen Park and Sharlene Howe – plus the helpers on the night. Also an extra/additional thank you to Ronnie Message and Sarah Storey who organised the wonderful prizes and auction items.

Market Day: The school is organising a Market Day again this year which will be held later in Term 4. The PTA will be running a stall and we are asking for donations of the following items: second hand clothing, shoes, crockery and knick knacks that we can sell. Please NO electrical items as we are unable to sell these. Please bring your donations into school and they can be placed in the donation box in the foyer outside the staffroom. Thank you in advance for your contributions, they are appreciated.

Santa Parade: This year we would like to participate in the Papatoetoe Santa Parade on Wednesday 5th December. If you would like to participate then please complete the slip at the bottom of the newsletter and return it to the box in Room 1 (Ms Howe’s class). Parents, if your child/ren are participating then we do ask that you join the parade with us. We have chosen a theme of Kiwi Christmas so please dress up in whatever you would normally wear on a Kiwi Christmas day. The route is approximately 4kms long so please wear sensible shoes. More details will be provided once they are to hand.
