From the Deputy Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

We have had another busy week this week and the end of term seems to be arriving too quickly! Our Kapa Haka group took part in the Kapa Haka Festival held at Papatoetoe North Primary School on Wednesday. Our students performed beautifully and we were very proud of them, tino pai tamariki ma!

Mathex: Our top mathematics students from year 4, 5 and 6 will be competing in the annual Mathex competition on Thursday next week. This competition is traditionally held at our school and teams from local Papatoetoe schools take part all striving to win the Mathex trophies.

Gymnastics Zones: The Papatoetoe schools’ gymnastics zone competition also takes place next week. We have boys and girls teams of students who have been practicing their gymnastics skills in preparation for this competition. Please check below for more details about this event.

Have a lovely weekend with your special children.

Hei ano te whetu e tu nui, kotahi – a tatou tamariki.

There is only one star shining – our children.

Kind Regards

Susan Fidler

Deputy Principal

General Notices

Welcome to our New Students: Aadarsh Padayachi and Shawaiz Kalim.

Assembly Day: On Monday, 17 September, Room 24 will lead our assembly. As always you are most welcome to attend but please make sure that you are seated by 1.15pm.

Class visits to St Christopher’s Residential Home: Tomorrow Friday, 14 September (weather permitting) at 1.30pm, Room 24 will be visiting St Christopher’s Hospital.

Donations 2012: Thank you to the families who have paid their donation already. There are a number of families that have not yet paid the 2012 donation. PCS prides itself on offering students additional opportunities and resources over and above those offered, within the NZ curriculum, to benefit them as they mature to become contributing members of our community. Government funding includes and extends only to providing the basic curriculum – any resources additional to that must be funded via alternative sources such as donations, fundraising and contributions from parents.

PCS also appreciates that our teachers are very proud of the enhanced teaching and learning environment and we are able to attract a very high calibre of teachers to our school for this reason. This again benefits our children.

There will be notices sent home with students for this thank you. We appreciate very much your contribution. From the Board of Trustees.

Out of Zone Ballot: The Board has decided to conduct a ballot for some out of zone students to start in 2013. The ballot will be conducted on Tuesday, 23 October 2012. This is not an automatic right for out of zone siblings so you must apply on the appropriate forms that are available at the school office. Please ensure that you have your application in on time. Applications close on Monday, 15 October.

Odd Shoe Day – Friday, 14 September 2012: Come to school wearing odd and strange foot wear. If you are walking you may get a prize.

Mufti Day – Gold coin donation all proceeds go towards Camp Quality. This enables children with cancer and their families to have a holiday while being looked after.

Keep Shopping at Hunters Plaza: If you need to shop, please consider heading in the direction of Hunters Plaza where the popular school rewards programme is underway again this year. The school rewards program will finish on Sunday, 23 September. Last year we were one of the winners (my, can we shop..). All you have to do is collect your receipts and take them to the customer service desk outside Christies. We could be in to win first prize of $5,000.00, second is $3,000.00 and third prize is $2,000.00. At this stage we are 4th. Many thanks for your (shopping) support.

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. This week is Conservation week. Check out the following website to find out about all the things we can do to help protect our planet and conserve our precious resources, especially water. www.doc.govt.nz/conservation-week-home

Tips from TravelWise – Road Safety: Keep Safe Getting Out: The safest door opens onto the footpath side. This will keep children away from the busy road.

Papatoetoe School Zone Gymnastics Competition: This will be held on Tuesday, 18 September at Papatoetoe Gym Club – Gymcity Papatoetoe, 91 Cambridge Terrace, Papatoetoe. Year 4’s compete at 9.30am, Year 5’s compete at 11.00am and Year 6’s compete at 1.00pm. The children will be transported in the school van at their appropriate time to compete. School gym uniforms will be provided for them to wear. Parents and Caregivers are most welcome to come along and watch.

Room 22 needs your help! Inside today’s newsletter is a survey – we need your feedback on a design we have made for a new habitat garden and frog pond in our school. Are you allergic to any plants or insects? Do you have any thoughts about our design so far? Because you have a stake in our school, we need to know what you think! Please fill out the survey and students can return it to the technology room. It would be great to get surveys back by the end of next week so we can finalise our plan. Thank you!
