From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

3 Way Conferences: It was great to see so many of you at school last Thursday. Thank you for your support for your children and for their teachers. Each student has specific learning goals and we are all looking forward to optimum achievement for all. In the spirit of the Olympics, we want each of them to be the best that they can be.

PTA Sausage Sizzle: Thank you for your support for our PTA this week. Our wonderful Wendy Barwell is highly skilled on the food preparation front and on Tuesday managed to produce a delicious sausage sizzle for 258 students – a real achievement! You are a star, Wendy. Many thanks.

Sewing Option Group: Sincere thanks to Morag Wham, Paulette Thompson, Gill Frost and Darlene Martin for generously sharing their extensive craft skills with a group of senior students. These students recently completed dolls’ beds – complete with pillow, mattress and duvet. Each bed also contains a soft toy. They will be presented to Kids First at Middlemore Hospital next Wednesday. I am sure that the children in hospital will just love them. I was so thrilled with the polished products – our students have learned to use our school sewing machines very effectively, indeed and the quality of their sewing is amazing.

Art Project: We are working towards our cluster art festival that will take place in the first week in September at Papatoetoe North School. As usual we will exhibit about 30 pieces of art produced by our students. In addition, we have 2 incredibly talented MIT visual art students, Amiria Puia-Taylor and Lindsay Gaono, working with 12 of our very talented year 6 students this week. Their group mural will also be on display.

All the best for the best of weekends. No doubt, many of you will have been enjoying the Olympic Games and the success of many of our athletes. I always feel so proud of our teams.

Hei ano te whetu e tu nui, kotahi – a tatou tamariki

There is only one star shining – our children

Kind regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Assembly Day: On Monday, 13 August, Room 12 will lead our assembly. As always you are most welcome to attend but please make sure that you are seated by 1.15pm.

Class visits to St Christopher’s Residential Home: Tomorrow, Friday, 10 August (weather permitting) at 1.30pm, Room 12 will be visiting St Christopher’s Hospital.

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: Here are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. SAVING WATER: You can save lots of water when brushing your teeth if you only use the water to rinse. Take a shorter shower. Every two minutes you save on your shower can conserve more than ten litres of water.

Tips from the TravelWise – Road Safety: Always Use the Crossings – Children will copy your example, good or bad. Always use the safe crossing areas, respecting the road patrols.

Congratulations: We would like to express our congratulations to Allan Phung from Room 25. Recently Allan competed in the over 36kg Junior Boys section of the Auckland International Open Judo Tournament at the North Shore Events Centre. Allan competed brilliantly and won a bronze medal in his division. This competition attracted more than 450 entries from over 16 countries across the various divisions and is a points event for the Oceania Judo Union. Well done Allan – we are all very proud of you.”
