23 August 2012

From the Deputy Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

This week there has been a hint of warmer weather on the way. New green growth is just beginning to appear on some of our trees. Our students have been outside regularly in the break times but have missed the use of our field, hopefully there are some dryer days ahead.

Spellathon: Our spellathon is now well underway. Your assistance with students learning their target lists is appreciated. Students have only a few more days to collect as many sponsors as they can as the spelling testing is taking place this week.

Our past spellathons have been a very good source of raising additional funds that all of our students can benefit from. The funds we raise from this spellathon are going to be used to purchase a box of 100 books for each class. The students will use these books for reading independently. Any support you can provide will be of real assistance to all of our students. All sponsorship forms will need to be signed off and/or receipted whether or not money has been collected from sponsors. Thank you in anticipation of your ongoing support of our students through our spellathon.

Healthy Food: Our teachers encourage their students to make healthy food choices in accordance with our school policy. We ask for your assistance with this on special birthday occasions. Many parents like to bring a birthday cake into the classroom. If you want to share food with your child’s class in celebration of a birthday please choose a healthy food option and save the cake for your celebration at home. A fruit platter is a healthier option and is also usually safer in terms of the allergies that some children may have.

Daffodil Day: Daffodil day is the Cancer Society’s annual fundraising event and we are participating in this with a mufti day on Friday, 31 August. Students can bring a gold coin donation and wear something yellow or orange to take part in this fundraiser.

Hei ano te whetu e tu nui, kotahi – a tatou tamariki

There is only one star shining – our children

Have a lovely weekend with your special children.

Kind regards

Susan Fidler

Deputy Principal

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: Here are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. Being sustainable in an emergency. To make sure we are prepared for an emergency such as an earthquake it is necessary to have a number of essential items stored away. Water is essential so it is important to store bottled water for drinking, at least enough to last several days. Build up stocks of canned food and keep rubbish bags in case you can’t use the toilet. Have batteries for a torch and radio. By keeping supplies of these simple but important items we can make sure we are able to look after ourselves and help others.

Book Club: The book club orders will close on Friday, 31 August 2012. Would you please make sure all orders and money are put into a sealed envelope and ALL CHEQUES are made out to Papatoetoe Central School, as we send one cheque to pay for our book order.

Year 6 camp fundraising – AMAZING RAFFLES: The Y6 Term 3 AMAZING raffles continue. Two fabulous stationery packs and a $50 Smiggle voucher are to be raffled. Raffle tickets will be sold at Breaks 1 and 2 under Te Piringa Totara from Monday to Thursday. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could win one of these wonderful prizes? The more raffle tickets you buy the more chance you have of winning. The Year 6 students will also come around to your classes on Friday to sell tickets. Many thanks for your continued support PCS.
