From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

3 Way Conferences: It was great to see so many of you at school yesterday. We hope that you enjoyed being introduced by your children to their class teacher. The children were very proud of themselves. We are looking forward to maintaining a strong home-school partnership with you, so that each child can achieve to their optimum potential. We want everyone striving to be the best they can be. Thank you for your support if you purchased a book at the book fair and if you visited the science fair in the hall. Special thanks to Lena Erakovich for organising the science fair and inspiring the children to design and present their contributions – they were just wonderful.

Maths Week: In 2 weeks’ time, beginning Monday 13 August, all children will participate in Maths Week. We are planning an extra special focus on mathematics and there will be a number of exciting and challenging activities on offer for all students.

Under 40kg Rugby team: Last week the cluster schools managed to fit in a round robin rugby field day at Puhinui School. Our team played really well and enjoyed a win and a draw. I would like to say a very special thank you Filo Falani for assisting Phil Duncan with the coaching of our team this year. Filo was a great support during coaching sessions and at the field day.

Chess: As usual, we were in the medals at the southern zone chess championships on Wednesday. Our school’s chess players, under the expert coaching of Leonard McLaren and guidance of Celia Talbot, came in 2nd. Special thanks to Celia and congratulations to our teams who are all superb chess players.

PTA Sausage Sizzle: Next Monday year 4-6 students can buy a PTA special sausage for their lunch and year 0-3 can buy theirs on Tuesday. Many thanks for your support for our school, by encouraging your children to buy their lunch from the PTA team early next week.

All the best for the best of weekends.

Hei ano te whetu e tu nui, kotahi – a tatou tamariki

There is only one star shining – our children

Kind regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: Here are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. SUPERMARKET PLASTIC BAGS: They are not biodegradable and are making their way into our oceans, and subsequently, the food chain. Buy the stronger, reusable bags from your local Supermarket. They are cheaper in the long run, will last for a long time and will help the environment.

PTA Sausage Sizzle: On Monday and Tuesday next week the PTA will be running two sausage sizzles – one for seniors (Monday 6th August) and one for juniors (Tuesday 7th August). Please use the normal lunchroom order bags and if you require tomato sauce please also note this on the bag. The cost per sausage is $1.50 and they will be delivered to your classroom in time for break 2. Orders for seniors, years 4-6, will only be accepted on Monday 6th August and orders for juniors, years 1-3, will only be accepted on Tuesday 7th August. Please do not bring your money in any earlier.

Tips from the TravelWise – Road Safety: It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our kids safe. Keep our children safe and park safe. Please play your part by:

• Always observing the parking restrictions near the school • Always using the school patrol crossing

• Walk with your child or join a Walking School Bus • Choosing safety over convenience at all times
