From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

Thank you for your support for our professional development day last Friday. The focus was on developing our capabilities in the teaching of reading with understanding, which is our curriculum development area this year. We worked with a well know specialist Sheena Cameron, and we all agreed that her contribution was very helpful and inspiring. In addition, a number of our staff took workshops in the afternoon in a variety of other learning areas. I would like to thank Sue Fidler, Renu Naidu, Angela Stonestreet, Danielle Greer, Kirsty Paterson, Ellyce Best, Lena Erakovich, Dev Singh, Alex Hanson and Peter Robinson for sharing their expertise with us. It was a very worthwhile day of professional learning for us all. All staff at our school were involved, including all our wonderful learning assistants. Many thanks to all concerned.

Congratulations to Sharlene Howe: I would like you all to know how proud we are of Sharlene Howe, who teaches one of our year 1 classes and leads our community initiatives. On Sunday, Sharlene will attend the Order of St John Investiture Service where she is receiving the award of Commander of St John. This is a very distinguished rank in the Order of St John and we believe that in Sharlene’s case, it is richly deserved. Sharlene has an immense generosity of spirit and willingly gives her time and shares her many skills in this very important organisation, as well as at our school. Sharlene – you are one of life’s true givers and contributors and we wish to honour and congratulate you.

Olympics Challenge Day: We are having a sport activity day next Wednesday in the spirit of the Olympic Games. Each class will have the opportunity to participate in 12 different activities. Thank you to Mr Robinson and the year 6 students for organising this.

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend ahead – I have to say I am looking forward to checking out the All Blacks in their match against Ireland at Eden Park on Saturday evening. Whatever your choice of recreation, I hope that you can spend some special time with your children.

Kindest regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. TURN OFF COMPUTERS AT NIGHT. By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day. If you don’t want to wait for your computer to start up, set it to turn on automatically a few minutes before you get to work, or boot up while you’re pouring your morning cup of coffee.
