From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

The end of term 2 is rapidly approaching. Sports teams are trying to get in some final practices for the zone field day next Wednesday. You are welcome, of course, to support our teams. All games will be held at Bruce Pullman Park in Papakura, starting at 10.00am. There will be the customary Papatoetoe schools’ rivalry and it should be a great day. All of our schools have many talented students in the sports arena, for sure.

Congratulations to Arul Gaundar: We are all very proud of year 6 student Arul Gaundar, who has won a scholarship to attend St Kentigern School next year. Arul has worked very hard during his time at our school and he will make a wonderful contribution to his new school next year. You are a star, Arul! Congratulations from us all.

BoT Meeting, 25 June: You are welcome to attend the BoT meeting at 5.30pm in the oval room. We will be sharing mid year, school wide assessment data in reading with the BoT.

Students’ mid year reports: I am enjoying signing your children’s reports and I am pleased overall with the wonderful progress many students are making. It is great to see the results of lots of hard work by both children and their teachers. I feel particularly proud of the students who have limited English and attend our English language classes. Their progress is to be admired and celebrated, along with all of our other students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support as well. The strong partnerships that we have with you are hugely important and valuable in your children’s progress. The more effectively we work together, the better it is for your children.

All the best for the best of weekends – I hope that you can spend some special time with your special children.

Kindest regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. RECYCLE GLASS Put your glass in the Recycle Bin. Recycled glass reduces air pollution by 20 percent and water pollution by 50 percent. If it isn’t recycled it can take a million years to decompose.

Matariki – The Maori New Year- Thursday 21 June 2012: Today celebrates the start of Matariki which is the beautiful blue star cluster made up of seven bright stars (also called Pleiades or the Seven Sisters) that are seen in the dawn sky in late May and early June. Matariki has always been an important part of the Māori calendar. The reappearance of Matariki in the eastern sky before sunrise marks the beginning of the New Year. Matariki occurs at the end of the harvest, at a time when food is plentiful. During Matariki Maori celebrate their unique place in the world. They give respect to the land on which they live, and admiration to the mother earth, Papatūānuku.

If you wish to find out more about Matariki and the events planned in Auckland visit www.matarikifestival.org.nz

Charles Liu ( room 8 classroom teacher ) is working to create a school-wide Matariki display that will be placed in the school library. It will involve using artwork from all the classes, combining them into a night sky with unique star constellations.

Charles will be gathering together a few students across the school and will work with them to draw the constellations.

Winter Zones: The Papatoetoe Primary Schools Winter Zones Competition will be held on Wednesday 27th June 2012, with a saving day on Tuesday 24th July. Rugby, Soccer and Netball competitions will be held, all at Bruce Pulman Park, Walter Rd in Papakura. The games will run from approximately 10.00- 2.05pm. Parents and caregivers are most welcome to attend and watch the games. Students will be travelling to the park by bus, no cost is involved for parents. They will need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle, appropriate footwear and warm clothing. They will be wearing school sports uniforms. Please ask your children if they are involved in this tournament. We have been playing exchanges against other school in preparation for this tournament.

URGENT: Term 3 & 4 Enrolments: If you have or know of any preschoolers who live in the Papatoetoe Central school zone and who will be starting in Term 3 or 4, 2012, would you please notify the school office.
