From The Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

Yesterday’s event was a great success with all students participating in our PCS mini Olympics. The structured activities were wonderful and I would like to thank the WYNERS team and Counties Manukau Sport for their support and involvement. A special thank you to Peter Robinson and the year 6 students for organising the programme and managing the day. A message wall was set up and children were invited to send our Olympics team a “go for it” type of message. Many very encouraging messages were added throughout the day!

ICT Development: We continue to expand our ICT programme that now includes skyping. It is being used to great effect within the school and beyond the school. For example, a year 6 student left recently to live in China and his class mates have been skyping him to keep in touch and learn about the cultural differences between NZ and China. It is a valuable tool for encouraging oral language and we are all enjoying using it as a communication tool.

Government Backdown: Last week’s backdown by the government in relation to class size increases was welcomed by us all. We were all deeply concerned and disappointed about the policy and we are relieved at the outcome. If you expressed your concerns to the government, I would like to thank you for your support.

Farewell to our Student Teachers: I would like to thank the student teachers who have been on practicum at our school over the last 5 weeks. We have been working with 8 talented, committed and very professional teachers in training. Each of them has made a great contribution and we wish them all the very best in their teaching careers. They have been under the excellent supervision of Deputy Principal Sue Fidler and 8 of our wonderful teachers.

BoT Meeting, 25 June: You are welcome to attend our next meeting at 5.30pm in the oval room. We will be sharing mid year, school wide assessment data in reading with the BoT. Teachers are finalising students’ reports that will be sent home in the last week of this term. These reports will be discussed in depth with you and your child at the 3 way conferences on Thursday 2 August, next term.

All the best for the best of weekends. Enjoy the lovely (crisp) days, clear skies and the lingering beauty of the late autumn.

Kindest regards

Marilyn Gwilliam

Principal

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home. CUT DOWN ON BOTTLED WATER: Nearly 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled, instead taking thousands of years to decompose. Buy a reusable container and fill it with tap water, a great choice for the environment and your wallet. And check out this website to learn all about World Environment Day www.mfe.govt.nz

Parents of all new children who will be starting on the first day of term 3 (16 July 2012) need to have completed pre enrolment forms before 22 June 2012.
